In case you have yet to mark your calendar, Monday, March 8 is International Women’s Day, a day to celebrate the achievements of women worldwide. In honour of this special day (and let's face it, month!), we’ve rounded up a few of our favourite female-founded brands. From food, wine, intimates and jewellery, there is no shortage of inspiration and a whole lot to celebrate:
Summer Fresh
Odds are you have seen their signature green lids in the grocery store and have tasted or are full-on addicted to their delicious dips. There is no doubt that Summer Fresh is a staple in many a fridge. Backed by Founder and President Susan Niczowski, Summer Fresh is proudly known to have made hummus a household name and for shaping the fresh, gourmet food category as we know it today. Hummus, baba ganoush and sensational salads, oh my! We love how the Canadian company makes their products in small batches, just like they did three decades ago when founder, Susan, made her first batch of hummus alongside her mother and sister.
Cambria Wines
Can you believe out of the 4,200 wineries in California, only 14% have a lead female winemaker? Cambria Estate Winery is proudly one of them! And it doesn’t stop there. Not only is their head winemaker, Jill Russell, making major waves in an otherwise male-dominated industry, but the winery has been proudly rooted in female leadership since the beginning. Owner and Founder Babara Banke and her daughters Katie Jackson and Julia Jackson, have lovingly run their Santa Maria Estate for 30 years. Celebrate International Women’s Day the Cambria way, by uncorking a bottle of their Julia’s Vineyard Pinot Noir or Katherine’s Vineyard Chardonnay!
Nadège Patisserie
Known for their decadent treats, including French-style croissants, macarons, pastries and more, there’s no wondering why Torontonians have a sweet spot for Nadège Patisserie. Owner and fourth-generation pastry chef Nadège Nourian opened her first namesake boutique bakery in 2009 and hasn’t looked back since. Now with four locations and countless awards from media, critics and the like, Nadège is known for being a game-changer in Toronto’s pastry scene and most importantly, for fueling our macaron addiction!
Mejuri
The Toronto-based e-commerce jewellery company has made a big name for itself over the past 8 years, redefining luxury and making it affordable! Co-founder and CEO Noura Sakkijha, is a third-generation jeweller and master marketer known for her Mejuri campaigns that target women buying jewellery for themselves versus targeting consumers looking for gifts. The beloved brand has struck a major chord with consumers world-wide (shipping to almost 35 countries!) and has notably broken the barrier of traditional fine jewellery in the process! Who knew all the glitters, is gold!
